Oil-based OPV versus aqueous varnish on folding board
Oil gloss and matte OPV sit close to conventional ink. Aqueous varnish cuts VOC and changes drying. Pick with the coater you have, not with a catalog adjective.
Two vehicles, two dryers
Oil-based overprint varnish uses a vehicle close to conventional ink. It often goes down on the last print unit without a dedicated coater. Aqueous varnish needs water to leave—IR and air—and a circulating system that likes a pH window.
HuiRun quotes LOCOER oil gloss/matte varnish and aqueous lines such as 818D and the 800–820 class, plus Honglu water-based varnish. We will not tell you aqueous is always greener until you count wash-up and dryer energy.
- Oil OPV: simpler on a print unit; higher solvent character.
- Aqueous: lower ink-room VOC story; needs dryer discipline.
- Do not lay aqueous on greasy, under-dried oil ink without a trial.
- Matte oil and matte aqueous scuff differently; agree a rub method.

When oil OPV stays
Short runs, no coater, and a customer who already signed an oil coat. If the plant cannot add air knives, forcing aqueous will powder.
When aqueous earns its keep
Brand VOC language, in-line coating towers, and stacks that can take water. 818D-class grades are the conversation starter; the TDS still wins on viscosity.
RFQ
Coater yes/no, oil or water today, board, ink family (conventional vs UV), and rub target. We will name oil varnish, 818D / 800–820, or Honglu aqueous.
What the quote covers
Gloss units on a maker chart are laboratory coats. Your anilox and dryer move them. HuiRun ships named pails and the TDS.

- How should the numbers in this article be used?
- The ranges here are typical shop practice. Confirm them on your press, paper lot, and lamps or dryer. Catalog numbers stay on the data sheet; the signed sheet comes from a trial.
