Offset ink auxiliaries: drier, reducer, and stay-open paste without wrecking the lot
A tube of drier will not fix a wet pile if the fountain is wrong. Auxiliaries are small doses with large side effects. Weigh them.
Auxiliaries are not a second ink
Reducers thin body. Driers accelerate oxidation. Stay-open pastes fight skinning on the rollers. Each one moves tack, gloss, and emulsification. Typical catalog items in the Furey list include 05-92 tack reducer, 05-93 reducer, stay-open paste, and quick-dry paste.
HuiRun quotes those named auxiliaries next to conventional grades such as LC-0022. We will not tell you to “add some drier” as a first answer to slow dry.
- Weigh as a percent of ink, never a free squeeze.
- Record the dose on the ticket so the next shift can copy it.
- Do not mix three pastes because each leaflet promised a miracle.
- UV inks need UV auxiliaries, not conventional drier.
- Fix fountain and film weight before you chemistry the tin.
Drier paste
Extra drier on a closed board can skin the rollers and still smear in the pile. Extra drier on a yellow can shift hue. Use the window on the auxiliary TDS, then trial a few thousand sheets.
Reducer and tack
If the ink piles on a closed coat, a small reducer dose can help. If the ink already flies, reducer makes misting worse. Measure tack if you have a tackmeter; if not, compare a drawdown body against the retain.
Stay-open paste
Night stops and long make-readies are the use case. It is not a licence to leave fountains uncovered for a weekend.
What the quote covers
Overdose is on the pressroom. We ship manufacturer tubes and bags with the printed ratio. If a lot already failed incoming, do not “save” it with paste.
