Conventional oxidative offset vs UV for paper packaging lines
Oxidative sheetfed inks and UV offset inks solve different bottlenecks on paper packaging. Choose by drying window, stock, finishing, and the customer’s chemistry limits.
Drying by oxidation is not the same as curing by light
Conventional sheetfed packaging inks set into the stock and then oxidise. The pile needs time, air, and often spray powder before rub is safe. UV and LED-UV offset inks polymerise under a lamp; the film can go to finishing in seconds if the dose and the ink film are correct.
That difference drives everything else: energy, spare lamps, photoinitiator questions, and whether you can print non-absorbent board in one pass. Typical conventional lines keep a delivery buffer measured in hours. Typical UV carton lines measure the buffer in minutes.
HuiRun supplies both conventional and UV offset inks as a distributor. The press already installed usually decides the first shortlist. Retrofitting lamps is a capital project, not an ink-tin swap.
- Conventional: absorption plus oxidation in the pile.
- UV / LED-UV: polymerisation under a specified lamp spectrum.
- Finishing wait differs by hours versus seconds when cure is complete.
- Lamp dose and film weight decide whether UV is actually dry.
- HuiRun sells both families; we do not install lamps.
When conventional oxidative ink still wins on paper
If the plant already runs coated paper and folding carton on a conventional press, oxidative ink is usually the lower-friction choice. Operators know the fountain, the powder, and the overnight stay-open behaviour. Typical jobs with generous delivery time and absorbent or semi-absorbent board stay in this family.
Food-brand specifications sometimes prefer conventional ink plus water-based varnish because they want to avoid photoinitiator and incomplete-cure debates. That preference is a customer constraint, not a universal rule. You still verify migration and residual solvent as a separate exercise.
Honglu and LOCOER conventional grades that HuiRun lists are aimed at paper packaging and commercial work. They will not make a polyethylene-coated board behave like paper. If the stock is closed, conventional ink can sit on top and smear.
When UV or LED-UV is the packaging-line tool
UV offset earns its place when the line must finish immediately, when the board is low-absorbency, or when you print metallised and plastic-laminated cartons. Instant cure also reduces set-off risk in a tall pile. Typical LED-UV retrofits cut some heat and energy versus mercury lamps, but they still need a matched ink.
The cost is process control. Incomplete cure looks like dry ink and then fails rub, odour, or extractables. Lamp age, reflector dirt, and speed changes move the dose. Related troubleshooting on incomplete cure belongs on the maintenance list, not only on the ink complaint form.
HuiRun can quote UV offset options alongside conventional ones. We will ask for lamp type, peak wavelength class, and whether the customer forbids UV on food packs. We will not invent a cure-energy certificate.
- Immediate finishing and low-absorbency stocks favour UV.
- LED-UV needs a matched ink, not a mercury leftover.
- Incomplete cure is a line problem as much as an ink problem.
- Confirm the brand allows UV before you change the job ticket.
- Typical energy savings are plant-specific, not a catalogue constant.
Layout, energy, and the finishing aisle
A conventional packaging line budgets space for airing, powder extraction, and sometimes overnight pallets. A UV line budgets lamp housings, interlocks, and spare bulbs or LED modules. Typical electricity and HVAC loads are higher on UV; typical WIP pallets are lower.
Hybrid plants run both. They keep conventional for long-run paper cartons and UV for short-run or non-absorbent work. That split only works if the ink room labels the tins and the job ticket names the chemistry. Cross-contamination of conventional rollers with UV ink is an expensive wash-up.
Choose varnish in the same decision. Water-based OPV sits naturally after conventional ink. UV varnish sits after UV ink. Mixing families without a proven primer is a trial, not a default.
A distributor comparison, not a brand slogan
Hefei HuiRun stocks conventional offset and UV offset from Honglu and from the authorized LOCOER / Furey catalog so a packaging plant can trial both sides of the aisle. We compare on your press speed, stock list, and customer chemistry bans. We do not claim UV is always greener or that conventional is always safer.
Bring a slow-drying conventional complaint and a UV cure complaint to different checklists. One is oxygen, powder, and stock. The other is dose, film, and photoinitiator. Typical ranges we quote for dry time or lamp power come from manufacturers and must be confirmed on your machine.
If you are still on paper board with hours in the schedule, stay conventional unless a closed stock or a finishing bottleneck says otherwise. If the line is already UV, buy UV ink that matches the lamp. HuiRun will source from Hefei and attach the real TDS, not a slogan.
